Opening Night.
Artist Talk: Doug RosmanArtist Doug Rosman (SAIC MFA 2019) gave a talk, followed by a workshop that highlighted the interactive components of his art. Doug’s talk focused on machine learning and his artistic practice, which deals with how we understand and create meaning—specifically around notions of the self—in a reality increasingly mediated by digital technologies, such as artificial intelligence that act with a certain level of agency. Doug’s workshop invited participants to record their physical movements as data, in order have their own image generated by these speculative systems that Doug creates.

Performance: Katie WoodArtist Katie Wood (SAIC MFA 2019) performed a new work as part of the closing reception for Fractured: Digital Topographies. Wood’s video essay IMMANENT DOMAIN / EXHIBIT A documents the death throes and life throes of the land in the Anthropocene through a series of site-based rituals. In this performance iteration, a pirate FM radio transmission followed a screening of the video. The transmission was broadcasted on a series of handmade radios, probing for a way out of the feedback loop of exploitative relationship to the land. Wood creates digitally augmented and acoustic soundscapes, ephemeral transmissions, and live works that blur boundaries between emergence and disappearance, cultivating refuges for silence.
